ABSTRACT

Silver and fluoride, in combination, have been used and studied extensively for efficacy in caries prevention and management. Numerous international studies have reported on the effectiveness of 38% Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) in preventing and arresting dental caries and for treatment of dentine hypersensitivity. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cleared the new formulation of 38% SDF in 2014. Application of SDF is simple and noninvasive where the silver component acts as an anti-microbial agent on bacteria, while the fluoride acts to prevent further demineralization of tooth structure. In 2016, the FDA announced ‘Breakthrough Designation Therapy’ to 38% SDF.

Silver diamine fluoride has the potential to play a very important role in minimally invasive dentistry for patients of all age groups. It is also helpful for patients who are unable to receive conventional restorative treatment or are awaiting dental treatment under general anesthesia. Some have called SDF as ‘NO DRILLING, cavity fighting liquid’. SDF is a strong example of changing paradigm in dentistry away from the traditional ‘drill and fill’, along with prevention of future decay.

This presentation brings the latest update on this ‘Magical Silver Fluoride Bullet’ i.e. SDF!
